A glossary of the Disconnected Edge
The vocabulary of working — and using AI — beyond the reach of the cloud.
- The Waiting Window noun
- The gap between the moment a problem appears in the field and the moment an answer arrives — a signal, an expert, or help. The minutes or hours a lone or remote worker is on their own. "Most of a remote crew's risk hides in the Waiting Window."
- No-signal environment noun
- Anywhere work happens beyond reliable cell, radio, satellite, wifi, or internet coverage — above the surface or below it. The place the Waiting Window opens.
- The Disconnected Edge noun
- The expanding frontier of places where connected tools stop working and the cloud cannot reach — from underground mines and open water today to the deep sea and deep space tomorrow. Not a niche, but a permanent boundary that moves outward as we do.
- Verified standalone AI noun
- An AI system that runs entirely on a device with no connection, and whose answers are drawn only from content a named expert has verified and reviewed by a field expert — designed to be trusted without a second source to check it against. The opposite of a general model guessing offline.
- Reach and reference noun
- The two halves of closing the Waiting Window. Reach is sending information out to summon help or report status. Reference is drawing in the knowledge needed to act now. Reach tells you help is coming; reference tells you what to do while it does.
- The trust gap noun
- The difference between an offline AI producing an answer and producing an answer worth acting on. A general model gives you an answer; only a verified one closes the trust gap — the whole point when no one is there to check it.
