Frequently asked questions
The Waiting Window, no-signal environments, offline AI you can trust, and how PocketAtom works.
What is the Waiting Window?
The Waiting Window is the gap between the moment a problem appears in the field and the moment an answer arrives — a signal, an expert, or help. It is the minutes or hours a lone or remote worker is on their own.
What is a no-signal environment or the Disconnected Edge?
A no-signal environment — also called the Disconnected Edge — is anywhere work happens beyond reliable cell, radio, satellite, wifi, or internet coverage, above or below the surface: underground, offshore, or deep in the backcountry.
How do lone and remote workers get information when there is no signal?
Today they rely on paper manuals, an experienced colleague, or waiting until they are back in coverage — each slow or unreliable. The emerging option is a verified reference tool that runs on the device and answers from the organisation's own approved procedures with no connection.
Can you trust an AI that works offline?
Only if it is verified and bounded. A general offline AI can invent a confident wrong answer, which in a high-consequence setting is worse than none. A trustworthy tool draws only from expert-reviewed content, shows its source, and says plainly when it does not know.
How is PocketAtom different from lone-worker safety monitoring like Blackline?
Monitoring tools solve reach — summoning help and reporting location. PocketAtom solves reference — giving the worker the right answer to act on now. Reach tells you help is coming; reference tells you what to do while it does. They are complementary, not competing.
What should an offline reference tool for field workers do?
Work with no signal; draw only from the organisation's own expert-reviewed procedures; show the source of every answer; say when it does not know; run on standard phones; and stay scoped as a reference aid — not a medical device.
Is PocketAtom a medical device?
No. PocketAtom is a reference tool that surfaces your own approved procedures offline. It does not diagnose or treat, and it does not replace training, safety rules, or emergency services.
Does PocketAtom work fully offline?
Yes. It runs entirely on the device with no cell, radio, satellite, wifi, or internet connection needed. It can sync its activity back to base when a connection is available.
What does "expert-reviewed" mean?
A real, named, qualified expert has verified and reviewed by a field expert, and dated the content the tool draws from. That review can be kept in a safety or compliance file.
Does PocketAtom help with working-alone compliance?
It can support it. Giving a lone worker instant offline access to approved procedures helps meet the duty to protect isolated workers and leaves an audit-ready record. It supports a program; it does not replace one.
Which industries is PocketAtom for?
Lone and remote crews who work where the signal drops — mining and exploration, oil and gas, forestry, utilities and renewables, and maritime.
Does my data stay private?
Yes. Because everything runs on the device, questions and data do not leave the phone unless you choose to sync them.
